Sluggers was opened on November 11, 1988 in Coralville on the “Coralville Strip” by Faye Swift. At that time the only other restaurants were a Bonanza Steak across the street and the Ponderosa Steak House down the road. We were the first family friendly restaurant and bar in town with TV’s for viewing sports. It was a big adventure, and we were very successful basing our business on great food and friendly, home town service.
Our 20th anniversary celebration was going to be November of 2008 but the Epic Flood of 2008 cancelled that event.
On June 13, 2008 Sluggers was flooded along with many of our neighbors and friends. When all seemed lost, the “big house” in North Liberty became available, and we moved. In doing so we decided to let Sluggers have a rest and open with a new concept and old traditions. We kept many of our Sluggers favorites and added some new ones.
Our new concept, REDS ALEHOUSE is just that. A neighborhood alehouse featuring beers on tap not only from around the world, but from around the corner in Iowa City and Amana. We offer 18 draft beers, an extensive wine list, tasty food, and friendly service. Please join us and experience the rich tradition that the Swift family brings to the community.
